A shallow depth of field is the small or narrow area in an image that is in focus. Often, the background is blurred while only the subject stays in focus. The further the subject is from the background dramatically decreases the depth of field as it gives the image some depth. The distance between subjects will also give this effect

Due to similarity in name and nature, depth of field (DOF) and depth of focus are commonly confused concepts. To simplify the definitions, DOF concerns the image quality of a stationary lens as an object is repositioned, whereas depth of focus concerns a stationary object and a sensor's ability to maintain focus for different sensor positions, including tilt.
Depth of Field is broken up into three layers (or region); Near, Far, and Focal Region. Each of these is processed separately and then later composited together to achieve the final image effect. Objects in the Near and Far layers are always fully blurred. They are blended with the non-blurred scene to achieve the final result.
Depth of field is the area in which elements are acceptably in focus. Objects closer of further away from that area will be progressively blurry.
